Melissa McCarthy too Fat for Fox: Photoshop Strikes Again
Comedian Melissa McCarthy (if you don’t know now you know!) is a colourful and talented actress who I first fell in love with when she played bubbly chef Sookie in the TV series Gilmore Girls (2000-2007). Some of her other hilarious works have included Bridesmaids (2011), Identity Theft (2013), and most recently The Heat (2013).
From day one of her career, Melissa has embraced her chubby-girl physique, and honourably, has never made any of the famous headlines exposing women’s “roller coaster” dieting, baby bump allegations, and so on. Despite her career in hollywood, (which, as we know, often brings the demise to many personal lives), she has been happily married to the same man for almost 9 years, and is a loving mother to two beautiful children.
So of course, the media can’t just let go around letting happiness and self-confidence go unpunished, especially when you are overweight. The marketing department at 20th Century Fox decided that enough was enough, and in editing the movie poster for The Heat, they got their underhanded revenge on Melissa.
This is the original version of the movie poster:
And here is the one released:
As you can see, they lopped off a good 30 pounds and OBVIOUSLY completely changed her face! WHY? She has naturally beautiful features (blue eyes and a big proud smile). If I didnt know any better, I would say that they have made these alterations to reflect their opinion of her appearance, giving the impression that she feels (or should feel) the same way. Maybe?
It is possible that, because of the ‘hard-core’ nature of her character, the company decided that Melissa’s expression might have delivered mixed messaging. However, if that were indeed the case, why would she need to be skinnier and brown-eyed?
